First C 17 touched down in India


18 Jun 2013 saw the first of the ten Boeing C 17 Globemaster III, ordered from the United States, touchdown in India, at Hindan airbase. With the training of the aircrew and the ground crew being conducted by the United States Air Force (USAF), the Indian Air Force accepted the delivery of the aircraft on 11 Jun 2013 at Long Beach, California. The aircraft will enhance the operational potential of the IAF with its payload carriage and performance capability and would augment the strategic reach of the Nation during disaster relief or any similar mission. The induction of C 17 is a major milestone in the modernization drive of the IAF.

Hill Forts of Rajasthan on the World Heritage List


The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO in its 37th Session has approved for inscribing 6 hill forts of Rajasthan on the World Heritage List. The Hill Forts of Rajasthan is a serial nomination consisting of six sites located on rocky outcrops of the Aravalli mountain range. They represent Rajput military hill architecture, which are exceptional examples of centres of Rajput power and control, are reflections of courtly culture and patronage of arts and music, their mercantile business, etc. The structural remains/ruins range from 8th to 19th century A.D. and comprises multi-gated approaches through massive and high fortification walls, palaces, temples, memorials and water reservoirs. The extensive fortifications – up to 20 kilometres in circumference – exploit the contours of the hills, and specifically the river at Gagron, the dense forest at Ranthambhore, and the desert at Jaisalmer.

No rate cut in June mid quarter monetary policy review


The Reserve Bank of India in its June mid quarter monetary policy review left its key policy (repo) rate unchanged at 7.25 percent in line with expectation. Cash reserve ratio (CRR) remained at 4 percent. The fear of inflation ghost primarily prompted the central bank to maintain status quo. Repo is the rate at which banks borrow from the central bank. CRR is the portion of deposits that banks are mandated to keep with RBI. The headline wholesale price index (WPI) inflation stood at 4.7 percent, a 42-month low as against 4.89 percent in April. Similarly, retail inflation or consumer price index (CPI) also softened from 9.39 percent in April to 9.30 percent in May.

In a major setback to National Democratic Alliance ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha election, the Janata Dal (United) broke its ties with the BJP in Bihar in protest against the elevation of Narendra Modi, bringing to an end a 17-year-old alliance that had held firm through thick and thin in the national politics. Heading the eight-year-old coalition in the State, JD (U), which does not need the BJP support to run the government, removed 11 the BJP ministers from the state Cabinet and decided to seek a vote of confidence on June 19 in view of the new situation.

Malnutrition causes 45 per cent of child deaths


According to a research report published as part of The Lancet Series on maternal and child nutrition, malnutrition is responsible for nearly 45 per cent of deaths in children under-five. The research shows that malnutrition is responsible for around 3.1 million deaths in children under five annually. Results estimate that reduced growth affected around 165 million children worldwide in 2011 while at least 52 million children were affected by wasting (low weight for height), and 100 million children were underweight.

Government hikes gold, platinum import duty


The finance ministry of India announced a hike in gold import duty to 8% from current 6 percent in order to curb extremely high demand for the yellow metal. The government also hiked platinum import duty to 8% from 6%. This is the second hike in gold import duty since January. Gold import duty has been hiked to 8 percent from 2 percent in past two years. In the last two years import duty on gold has gone up almost eight fold compared to the Rs 300 per 10 grams that used to be before 2012. In April, 2013, gold and silver imports surged by 138 percent to USD 7.5 billion, as against USD 3.1 billion a year ago.
